Commonwealth Day in 2010 falls on Monday 8 March. Increasingly, there is a move to extend the theme into a series of events taking place throughout the year across London and the UK, and mirrored in all capitals and countries of the 54 countries of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Day theme for 2010 is Science, Technology and Society. It will be celebrated not only at the traditional Westminster Abbey Observance Ceremony on Commonwealth Day itself, attended by the Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty The Queen, but also through public lectures, debates, museum displays, theatrical and musical events, and educational activities taking place during the rest of the week and throughout the year.

World Book Day 2010 in the UK and Ireland will take place on Thursday 4th March. A main aim of the day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.
World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 80 years ago.

Don’t forget that it’s Fairtrade Fortnight! Swap your regular goods for fairly traded ones and make a difference.
The Co-operative has been supporting Fairtrade since the inception of the Fairtrade mark back in 1994. And in 1998 launched their own long-term plan to ‘mainstream’ Fairtrade. Through ongoing campaigning, product innovation and leadership they’ve helped develop the UK as one of the largest Fairtrade markets in the world, supporting millions of growers and producers in developing countries.
Fairtrade ensures that disadvantaged producers in developing countries get a better deal for their crop. The premium they receive can be used to improve their working and living conditions and for community projects, such as providing clean drinking water.

Hampshire social enterprise, Total Coverage graphic design co-operative, was amongst a number of social enterprises and business leaders who had a unique opportunity to ‘Learn and Earn’ at the recent 3MARKET event held at the University of Southampton.
Keynote speaker, Red or Dead design brand founder Wayne Hemmingway, urged Hampshire’s army of social entrepreneurs to cash in on the “massive opportunities” available to them.
The maverick designer of everything from shirts to sheds was the star attraction at an event to highlight the county’s thriving social enterprise sector, which numbers 2,200 businesses, including 277 in Southampton.
A social enterprise is typically a business with a mission to benefit society that ploughs profits, known as surpluses, back into the company rather than paying dividends to shareholders.
The sector – currently 62,000 UK enterprises contributing £24 billion to the economy – is growing rapidly.

Safer Internet Day is organised by Insafe each year in February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.
On Safer Internet Day 2010 , INSAFE launches the campaign “Think B4 U post”.
Children and teenagers need to be empowered to manage their online identity, including publishing of pictures and videos, in a responsible way. This is why INSAFE decided to launch the campaign “Think B4 U post ! ” on Safer Internet Day 2010. Children and teenagers should be made aware that they can control their online identity, by using the privacy settings offered by social networing services, selecting friends online that they can trust, publishing their own photos after thinking carefully about the potential consequences, and pictures of their friends with their permission.
